Leave No Trace
When you depart the fair grounds after the event, your camp area should look as clean and kept as when you arrived. Make it so by following these simple rules.
|
|
- Participants are responsible for the disposal of their own garbage and clean up of their campsites. Dispose of trash responsibly. Cans are available around the site.
- No digging on site. This includes trenches, fire pits, sinkholes or any type of hole.
- All fires must be contained within an above-ground fireplace. All fires must be completely extinguished with all the remains removed. Do not dispose of ashes from fires unless they are completely cold. Dumping of coals on the grounds is not permitted. State regulations prohibit importing firewood from other states. You may purchase firewood from a number of stores in the surrounding area (please plan to acquire your firewood as close to the site as possible.) You MAY NOT cull the grounds for firewood or cut branches from or cut down trees.
- Please do not dispose of anything other than human waste and toilet paper in the portable toilets (this means NO disposable diapers, pet waste bags, feminine hygiene products, bottles, cans etc.)
- Please DO NOT wash dishes in the sinks inside the bath house.
- Do not move or remove tables/chairs from common areas (including picnic tables).
- There is NO camping within buildings or under pole barn roofs (the buildings are not up to fire code/equipped/certified for residential), however, in case of inclement weather we may seek shelter in the buildings as needed.

Traffic & Parking
To maintain a more medieval atmosphere for the enjoyment of event participants, the following guidelines must be followed by all participants and staff. Repeat infractions of these rules will lead to expulsion without refund.
|
|
- The entire site has a strict 5 mph speed limit.
- RED labeled roads are for pedestrian traffic ONLY. BLUE labeled roads are for vehicle traffic. The only exception is for merchants who may access the merchants road with vehicles when setting up or taking down.
- All vehicles must be removed to the parking area after loading or unloading them. You may not leave a motor vehicle in camp, even if you cover it with tarps or otherwise camouflage it. (Trailer-based tiny houses and Vardo-style residences are not considered motor vehicles so long as they are designed to be towed.)
- DO NOT PARK ALONG ANY ROADS ON SITE. Your vehicle will either be loading / unloading at your camp OR in the parking lot, NEVER parked along the road.
|
Pets
Pets are welcome on site at The Great Northern Thyng under the following guidelines.
|
|
- Pets must remain leashed or caged at all times and must remain in the owner's control. There is a firm one warning rule. If a pet is roaming free a second time you will be asked to leave the site.
- You must pick up your pets waste for the health and safety of all. You may NOT dispose of bags of animal waste in the portable toilets. The bags will damage the equipment used to pump out and clean the toilets.
- Please be sure your animal has complete and current vaccinations before you bring it to The Great Northern Thyng. Wildlife of all types (including rodents) may come in contact with your pet.
- Horses, poultry, or other livestock are NOT allowed on site as pets. Pets of an exotic nature (such as snakes, lizards and spiders), or unusual pets (such as monkeys etc.) are NOT allowed on site. If you are in doubt, contact the event Autocrat.
|
Alcohol, Tobacco and Controlled Substances
Modern laws do not cease to apply just because you are at an SCA event. Should staff learn of illegal activity on site, we will not hesitate to evict the participants without refund and will contact local legal agencies if necessary.
|
|
- The site is damp. Alcohol is allowed but all state and federal laws are in effect (the legal age for alcohol possession in New York is 21).
- ABSOLUTELY no fireworks are allowed on site. They are a fire and injury hazard and potentially spook animals present on site.
- ABSOLUTELY no firearms are allowed on site. Non fireing replicas must be obviously recognized as such by any reasonable individual.
- Smoking and vaping are banned in the central areas of the event. This includes the Market, inside the Mead Hall, Dance Hall, Moot Hall and Northern University area.
|
Youth & Children
The following rules are not arbitrary and exist for the protection of everyone involved - the parents, the minor, the event staff, and the site owner.
|
|
- No one under the age of 18 will be allowed on site unless accompanied by a parent, guardian, or other responsible adult. The parent or guardian must be present on site with the minor at all times. Parents or guardians may not sign the minor in (or just drop the minor off) and then leave for the weekend. Unaccompanied minors will not be allowed to remain at the event, and will be escorted off site into the custody of their parents or other authorities.
- Emancipated minors must show legal proof of emancipation, along with positive identification.
- All Children twelve and under (12) must be supervised at all times by a parent, guardian, or teen supervisor (13+). They must be within sight and sound range of their parent/guardian/responsible adult/teen supervisor at all times.
- Walkie-talkies and cell phones ARE NOT considered to extend the sight/sound range
- If an unsupervised child (12 or under) is found he/she will be returned by staff to his/her parent/adult guardian. If a child needs to be returned to his/her parents/guardian more than twice, the Autocrat may ask the family to leave the site without refund.
- If a youth (13+) is found behaving inappropriately, he/she will be returned by staff to his/her parents/adult guardian.
Inappropriate behavior includes the following:
- Going to off limits places, including playing in or around closed buildings or structures.
- Any inappropriately aggressive behavior or horseplay.
- Committing theft or harm to physical property.
If a youth needs to be returned to his/her parents/guardian more than twice, the Autocrat may ask the family to leave the site without refund.

Authorization & Participation
The following rules cover participation in the various activities offered during The Great Northern Thyng
|
|
- All individuals will be given a bracelet at gate. This bracelet must be worn at ALL times while on site. It is proof that you have been through gate and are on the waver. If you are not wearing your bracelet, you will not be able to participate in any activities. If you lose you bracelet or it comes off, return to gate and they will look you up and issue a new bracelet. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO T HIS RULE.
- All activities that require authorization to participate will use a two (2) sticker system. First, you must see the MOL and present your bracelet and authorization (they can look it up on their list if you do not have it). Once you have presented your bracelet and your authorization has been verified, the MOL will place the first sticker on your helm or mask. Once you have this sticker in place you can go see a marshal to be inspected. Once you pass inspection the marshal will place the second sticker within the first sticker. You are now ready to participate.
Please Note:
|
|
Take advantage of the authorization and inspection times prior to the start of activities (DO NOT WATE TILL THE LAST MOMENT).
Please remember that the MOL's are simply doing their job and following society and event guidelines. The only legal way to participate is to show your site bracelet and provide proof of your authorization. THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN SAY TO THE MOL'S TO CHANGE THIS FACT. Please help the MOL's do their job so that everyone can enjoy the event.
If your authorization has expired or you simply have not been authorized, see the MOL's as early as possible. They can provide you with the forms you need to get a temporary authorization in conjunction with the marshals. In addition, if you have lost your authorization card the MOL can provide you with a form to request a new one be sent.

Setting up in a restricted area will cause the removal of your Pavilion or sunshade. In addition, vehicles may not be parked along the roads that border the battle fields. These roads must be kept clear for emergency vehicle access. There as a small battle field parking area at the South West corner of the battle field (see map). No vehicles may be parked her prior to Saturday morning. RVs, CPAP and other Electrical Medical Needs
Washington County Fairground does have hookups for RVs in the overflow camping area. We do not feel that RVs are conducive to creating a medieval atmosphere at our event so all RVs must camp in the specified area north of the main camping area (this rule does not apply to Trailer-based tiny houses and Vardo-style residences). If you have special medical needs that require access to electricity and you are NOT camping in a RV, there are sites within the main camping area where electricity is available. Just let your needs be known at gate when you enter the site.
