A hornbook was a primer for introductory study that originated in the 15th century. Originally consisting of a wooden paddle with an alphabet and a verse glued to the surface, hornbooks derived their name from the piece of transparent horn protecting the lessons from being soiled. As time went on, the term Hornbook became used to describe a few different study materials in different fields.
The Hornbooks you will find here follow the spirit of the originals in that they are basic inductions to various arts and crafts that you may find useful in your pursuit of our hobby. Remember, these include simple, basic lessons designed to introduce you to the subject.
If you would like to contribute a Hornbook on some Art, Craft or Skill, please contact the Shire Web Minister. Simply click on any of the following links to go to that subjects Hornbook.
